As a farmer getting close to retirement, I would like to see my land farmed in the future. No one in the family seems to want to operate a farm. I would like to make some improvements to my farming operation. Where can I get assistance?There are several agencies that offer guidance in this area. Start locally with Monroe County’s Agricultural Environmental Management programs (AEM). There is also the NY Farm Bureau and American Farmland Trust (AFT) that would assist. Are there any tax incentives for me to keep farming my land?There are different incentives. To start with, there are incentives for being in the Monroe County Agricultural District. There are also some incentives in the 2008 Farm Bill.
Why should I preserve my land? Why not just get the biggest bang for my buck, and sell to a developer?Selling your land and/or farm to whomever you choose is your absolute right as a landowner. However, if you could get full market or almost full market value from your land, yet preserve that land for future farming, wouldn’t you want to try that first?
