History of the Parma Town Hall Park
The Parma Town Hall at 1300 Parma Corners Road (Corgan and Balestiere Architects) opened for public business in 1969, situated on 10 original acres. In the late 1970’s, the Town purchased an additional 26 acres south of the existing property with the intent to incorporate several sport fields, which were completed through the early 1980’s. In 1985, the Town made another land purchase just north of the existing Town Hall totaling 19 acres with the focus on park expansion. Following a successful EQBA grant in 1988, the Town committed to purchase an additional 22 acres of property and to build the Parma Town Hall Park and Athletic Complex. This was also during the time that the community erected the spectacular Leathers Playground (1989-2003), which was the Town Hall Park focal point for the next 14 years.
Since 1988, the Town maintained this 77 acre complex until the sixth and final land purchases to date occurred in 2000. As part of some NYS grant funding under (EPF), the Town Board supported the Town Hall Park expansion project, which included purchasing 27 acres at the back of the Town Hall going north to Parma Center Road, taking over ownership of the 10 acres where the current VFW is situated off of Peck Road, and purchasing a total of 42 acres which connect all properties involved, bringing the Town Hall Park to 156 acres of active and passive recreational opportunities.
During the 20 plus years (1988-2009) of park development, the Town of Parma secured a total of 21 separate grants totaling over one million dollars to assist with its park infrastructure, and has been publicly recognized for this outstanding recreational resource.
